| The Furniture of Paradise |
Alathea, mother of Rintiala and Ariana, First Sister of the Guild of Healers, nominal head of all Nueguans. | Alathea intervenes in Rintiala's attempt to perform a
Caesarean section on a condemned pregnancy. |
|
|
|
The Enticement |
Alope is the younger sister of Dianire Redourine, and a
Novice in the Healing Temple. |
Alope is a precocious twelve-year-old who has left the her
clan's traditional Guild of Builders to study under Rintiala. |
| Several |
Some basic Aikido sword fighting techniques, a live-action
sketch I did at the Saskatoon dojo. |
Variations used for the battles with the King's Guard. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise |
An Oldest Mother, an organic AI that resides in the Birthing
Mothers. |
One of the intelligences Rintiala, Dianire and Ariana have to
slip past to perform an illegal Caesarean section on Tianara, Dianire's
older sister, and a minor member of the Guild of Builders. |
|
| The Enticement |
A generic Sister in a generic Cactus Mother, just before she
is enshrouded. |
Used several times, to indication how a Cactus Mother adjusts
its biology to that of a Sister. |
|
| The Enticement |
A generic Sister, enshrouded by the Cactus Mother. |
Rintiala will be emerging from deep within the Cactus Mother,
in a fugue state. |
|
| The Enticement |

| Some color changes for background effects. | |||
| The Furniture of Paradise |
An early stage in the transformation of a Sister from her
human body to her dreaming form. |
A possible future animation using MakeHuman and Blender. |
|
| The Trader' s Banquet |
A Healing Sister in formal attire. |
A bit slave-girlish, I know, but the Healers are going all
out to compete with the others Sister's Guilds for the attention of the
Apache Traders. |
|
| The Trader's Banquet |
An older Healing Sister in format attire. |
Every fold of cloth has meaning to the other Nueguan Sisters,
rank is a very subtle affair among the Guilds. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise, The Gailuro, Catching the Swarm. |
The sworn enemy of Gringos and Spaniard's alike, the
legendary demonic Dona Dina. |
Dianire's unrequited love for Rintiala becomes fused with her
hatred of Gringos and Spaniards, and sets her on the path of war. |
|
| The Gailuro |
Dianire in Mothersilk battle armor. Her left eye can see what
the Wild Mother sees. |
The beginning of the Warrior's Guild, the misuse of Nueguan
technology for the purposes of violence. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise |
Dianire's dreaming body. |
The choice of colors and the angularity of design indicates
her latent violent tendencies. |
|
| The Announcement, or the Grand Ball |
Dianire appears outside Ariana's bedroom in Santa Fe. |
Enraged that she has suffered so much loss on account of
Ariana's immaturity, Dianire murders her, and thus begins
the War Against the Nueguans. |
|
| The Gailuro |
Dianire does open battle with the Wester Bandits. Sensing a
promising ally, they sue for peace. |
Dianire discovers her fighting abilities a bit at a time.
They are programmed into the Dark Queen treatment she receives in the
Gailuro. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise. |
Ariana warming up to the task of Dreaming. |
A each stage the human form begins to fade, and the dreaming
symbols become more pronounced. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise. |
Ariana in full Dreaming mode. |
A possible animation using MakeHuman and Blender. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise. |
Rintiala entering Dreaming mode. |
Note the use of values to indicate the solidity of the flesh. |
|
| The Furniture of Paradise. |
More Ariana |
||
| The Furniture of Paradise |
Dianire in full Dreaming mode. |
A possible animation, stressing how different Dianire's dance
is from Ariana's. |
|
| The Gailuro |
Duji, once the betrothed of Rintiala, and now one of the last
survivors of the Warrior Guild, faces the combined Apache Police and
Spanish King's Guard on top of the Coolidge Dam. |
More Mothersilk armor, this time allowing a male to see into
the Cactus Mother. This combat decision by Dianire alienates her from
all the Guilds, and convinces the Demetrans to surrender and align
themselves with the Apache. |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Finds-Water, Trader of the White Mountain Apache, and chief
negotiator to the Nueguans. |
I'm using Bill Nighe for my model here. Finds-Water has plans
behind his plans, and prefers to be misread as a harmless old man,
which he is not. |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Finds-Water holding his badge of office, the hoop of the
Seven Traders, which effectively allows him to speak for all
Apache. |
The fist-with-the-hoop image is very appealing. Is hostile
and suspicious, or power-through-diplomacy? |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Hunts-the-Ruins, a Phoenix Apache, and apprentice Trader. |
At the time of the Ghost Sickness chapter, there are no
Phoenix Apache per se, they have to earn the right to align themselves
with the Seven Tribes. Opening up Paradise Valley will ensure that. |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Rintiala and Hunts-the-Ruins leaving Scottsdale, having
successfully completed their mission. |
Hunts-the-Ruins is given an Mothersilk travel cloak, to
indicate his new status as Apache Trader to the Nueguans. |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Hunts-the-Ruins stripping down and suiting up in Sky Wanderer
armor. |
The face is wrong (Finds-Water), but the techy look of the
undergarments is right. |
|
| Ghost Sickness |
Hunts-the-Ruins and Rintiala defend themselves against the
automated defenses of Paradise Valley. |
Neither of them can abide wearing the full armor, and much to
the chagrin of the Sean Landesten AI, they doff much of it. An
experiment with the 'buck et fill' tool of GIMP. |
|
| Cholera among the Jicarilla |
Hunts-the-Ruins, dressed in Mothersilk, but now shunned by
both Apache and Nueguans as a criminal, finds Don Benedetto wounded on
Highway 25, and tends to his needs. |
Ariana has pledged herself to Hunts-the-Ruins, and she has
gone ahead with Long Jumper (Trader for the Jicarilla) to confer with
King Carlos Sepulveda, ruler of New Spain. |
|
| The Meeting at the Green Lake Room. |
Hunts-the-Ruins, now half-Nuegan and half-Apache, delivers
the history of the Nueguan people to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey
of Carlsbad. |
Hunts-the-Ruins delivers a lecture to the cognoscenti of New
Spain, which is attended by Queen Ariana the Beautiful, who has no idea
of her Nueguan ancestry until this meeting. |
|
| Inset to Book Two: The Bright Queen |
The mythological beginnings of the Nueguan People. |
Here Lightning tells Earth Mother that he will be needed
again, to defend her against the inevitable return of the Sky Wanders.
"I will tread the Earth once more." |
|
| Miranda Traub, a figure skater and friend of the Abbey,
posing for combat scenes. |
Most likely this will be Dianire Redourine |
A potential animation using MakeHuman and Blender. |
|
| The Trader's Banquet, the Warrior's Guild |
Formal Nueguan Sister wear. |
||
| The Grand Ball |
Rintiala uses her burgeoning Bright Queen powers to warn
Ariana of the threat of Dianire. Rintiala can now Dream without a
Cactus Mother. |
Rintiala's unsuccessful attempt to intervene between Ariana
and Dianire. |
|
| The Cholera among the Jicarilla |
Ariana in her Mothersilk travelling cloak. |
It is this cloak that convinces King Carlos of the reality of
the Nueguans. |
|
| The Trader's Banquet |
One of the very earliest drawings, most likely 1987 or 1988 |
A possible animation using MakeHuman and Blender. |
|
| The Trader's Banquet |
Demetrans use their Enticers to allure the Apache Traders. |
This is why the Healing Sisters got their slave-girl outfits
out of the closet! |
|
| The Trader's Banquet. |
Demetran outer-wear. |
Too tall for the later iteration of Demetrans, but the 'Dutch
milkmaid' design is still good. |
|
| The Enticement. |
Alope Redourine, all dolled up. |
She wriggles out of this the first chance she gets. |
|
| Yassah Learns His Checkers |
The Old Graspers, pre-lin guistic, are being phased out in
favor of vocal Graspers like Yassah |
The traditional beast-of-burden of the Nueguans: part-bird
and bpart-mammal. |
|
| The Warrior's Guild. |
The Oldest Mother, a Tialan gives her vote on the Warrior's
Guild. |
This drawing will be the backdrop for an explanation of the
Nueguan lifecycle. |
